Our fresh tilapia is farmed and packaged in northwest Honduras and southern Mexico. This close proximity to the United States allows us to deliver by land, sea or air, providing our grocery and foodservice clients with abundant, consistent supplies of fresh tilapia on a daily basis.
Thanks to advances in refrigeration technology, frozen tilapia arrives fresh and has the same shelf life as the product shipped by air. As the product comes off the production line at our plant in Honduras, it is super-chilled and transported in special refrigerated containers at the steady temperature of 31 Fahrenheit degrees all the way to Miami. Studies are finding that the aerobic plate counts (indicating the level of microorganisms in a product) are actually lower in ocean-shipped products than in fish shipped next-day. Our ocean-shipped frozen tilapia has been labeled with specifically trademarked brand name: OceanChill™ Fresh Tilapia to ensure our customers know exactly what they are buying.
Ocean shipping has other benefits, as well. Since it consumes 98% fuel than shipping by air, shiping by water drastically reduces our carbon footprint. In addition, it allows us to pass along the transportation savings to our customers.
